How much does Kindle publishing cost? This is a question that I hear a lot from a lot of my students and it’s a really important one, so I want to just answer it in this short video.

The short answer is that kindle publishing is free. You can sign up to Kindle Direct publishing, which is Amazon’s self-publishing platform, and all the tools that you need to create a book are right there. You can use Microsoft Word, or the free software called Open Office, to write your book and then upload it to Kindle Direct Publishing for free. You can even create your cover right within Kindle Direct publishing and they have free images available to you as well.

So that’s the short answer, but I want to tell you the longer answer, too, in case you want to get serious about publishing or start making money Publishing Kindle books. If you want to publish your own book and make it professional looking, or if you want to publish your own book and generate income from it, here are a couple of places where I recommend spending some money.

First, when it comes to selling your book, your cover is hugely important. The free covers that you can create on Kindle Direct Publishing are pretty bad, and won’t bring in a lot of sales for your book. To improve your cover a little, go to fiverr.com and spend five or ten dollars and hire someone to design a cover for you. This will likely be better than a cover that you create on KDP, but still not highly professional.

You can take it a step further by going to Upwork.com and hiring a designer there for anywhere between $15 and $50. You can spend more if you want, but what’s important is that you look at their portfolio and have a conversation with them to see if they create covers like what you want.

The cover is probably the most important place to spend money if you want your book to look professional and have a chance of selling.

The next thing you could spend a few dollars on is an editor. Upwork.com is also a good place to find editors, unless you know an editor who will do it for you. You can get varying levels of editing done for somewhere between $20 and several hundred dollars. The purpose of spending money on an editor is just to make your book is a higher quality. That way, people will like your book, will want to read your book, will leave good reviews, and will recommend it to their friends.

Finally, I recommend getting some good basic education about using the Kindle Direct Publishing dashboard, formatting your book so it works well on Kindle and doesn’t look weird, and some basic SEO strategies for using keywords in your title and description to help people find your book.
